2013 Chapter Outreach Events

  • 2013-11-21 Astronomy for Pack 705 @ George Walton Academy
    The intentions for Pack 705 was to learn all that is required to earn their Astronomy Belt Loop! Following a video clip in which they learned about the relative sizes of planets and stars, they learned all they need to know about the solar system, and the universe. Then they actually setup the scopes after they learned how to setup a scope, and we went outside to let them focus the scope on the tree tops since it was cloudy. A great event for the scouts and us!   • 2013-11-12 Stars over the Duluth Library
    This was the second event for the Duluth Library. About 159 individuals participated in this event and learned a lot about our solar system, what the little gravity of the Marsian Moon Deimos really means, and how we get rovers to Mars. Outside they took turns to look at the moon, the planetary nebula M57, Albireo and some star clusters! Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-11-09 CEWC’s “Becoming an Outdoors Woman” Event
    We reached out to about 43 ladies and their teachers who did participate in this CEWC event. In the afternoon we did a 3.5 hour presentation about astronomy including activities, and in the evening we let them look through 4 telescopes outside the Dining Hall Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-11-08 Starry Night over Flint Hill Elementary School
    The fourth time we went to Flint Hill Elementary School to let the 4th graders look through our telescopes at the night sky and everyone was able to see some of the nice features of the moon, the quarter phase of Venus, the ring nebula and star clusters.   • 2013-11-06 Stars over the Lilburn Library
    About 128 individuals participated and learned a lot about our solar system, what the little gravity of the Marsian Moon Deimos really means, and how we get rovers to Mars. Outside we were fighting the bright lights in the parking lot, but most saw the moon. (we had real long lines) and later they saw some double stars.!! Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-11-02 Observing from the Jon Wood Field”
    Following the meeting we had a star party for a large group of visitors from nearby towns and participants of CEWC’s Hunting and Learning program. Despite the cold, everyone had a great time observing what’s in the night sky through 19 telescopes! Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-10-18 Flint Hill Elementary School ASAP program
    We went back for the third time to Flint Hill Elementary School to teach the students attending the after school program about the Solar System. They learned the relative size of the planets and their relative distances from the Sun and they enjoyed learning about Mars and looking at the sun Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-10-12 Astronomy Outreach: Stars over the Jon Wood Field”
    Following the meeting we had a star party for a large group of students of the Stone Mountain Middle School as well as a group of attendees of several Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center programs. It started out being a little cloudy but when the clouds moved out, everyone had a great time observing what’s in the night sky! Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-10-01 Flint Hill Elementary School Solar Observing
    We went back to Flint Hill Elementary School to teach the students a bit more about the Solar System. They learned the relative size of the planets and their relative distances from the Sun! They enjoyed it very much walking “Earth” on its relative place in the solar system Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-09-30 Morgan County Middle School and Solar Observing
    We went again to Morgan County Middle School to reach out to the Astronomy Club in Madison. Very interested students with a dedicated teacher! Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-09-28 Pumpin Festival at Stone mountain and Scout Day
    Today was our second day at the mountain and about 800 visitors and scouts took a look at the Sun in different wavelenghts, the moon and the top of the mountain and got a feel of the size of the solar system by looking through a spotter scope at earth which was positioned at the correct spot in the model solar system.  Two great events!!   Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-09-27 Home School Day at Stone Mountain Park
    Stone Mountain Park did invite us to take part in their Home School Day.  About 650 students and parents took the opportunity to learn about the Solar system and its relative size, how telescopes work by examining an open telescope and observing the top of the mountain, and finally observe the Moon and the Sun through a total of 8  H-alpha and white light telescopes.   Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-09-24 Flint Hill Elementary Mars and Solar
    The 4th graders of Flint Hill Elementary took a closer look at how planets and their moons look like.  They also learned about how we study Mars and what effect the gravity has on Mars and its moons.  Since it was a cloudy day, we will be back to let them learn and see the sun.   Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-09-20 Rock Solid Babtist church at FFA Camp
    We reached out to the youth group of the Rock Solid Babtist chirch in Covington during their event at the FFA Camo in covington  Because we had clouds they could only see the full moon, but saw the bright rays as you can see them only at full moon. Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-09-19 Heard Mixon Elementary Mars and Solar
    We were back again at Heard Mixon Elementary School for inside presentations, and since the sun was out we combined the next days event and let them observe the Sun.  They learned about how we study Mars and what effect the gravity has on Mars and its moons.  They also learned about the relative distances in the solar system and how small we are on Earth compared to the solar system.   • 2013-09-16 Harbour Oaks Montessori school at CE
    We were again invited to do a program for this school at Charlie Elliott. We did a solar program with them where they could observe the sun and learned about the relative distances in the solar system and how small we are on Earth compared to the solar system. They learned what the sun does and what UV rays do to us and the beads they got!! Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-09-14 Childrens Healthcare 2nd chance camp at Twin Lakes
    A joined event with Stephen Ramsden. Stephen asked me to join him in this event. It could not have been a nicer group of young kids and their parents to work with!! Click here for some pictures
  • 2013-09-12 The Sun over Stone Mountain Middle
    This was the fifth year that the 6th grade students from Stone Mountain Middle were able to take a look at our Sun. Frank and Theo went to the school for the day and over 300 students studied the sun with their own eyes and learned some more about the planets and our solar system.   • 2013-09-07 East Newton Elementary at Charlie Elliott’s Jon Wood Field
    This was the third year that the students from Mrs. Thompson’s fourth grade came out with their parents to see the night sky over Charlie Elliott. In addition 12 particpants from the AOC were there and 12 Educators who attended a workshop at CEWC also stopped by. They saw a nice cresent Moon, Venus and Saturn, a planetary nebula, star clusters, a double star and the Andromeda gallaxy and not to forget the Milky Way. A real busy evening at the Jon Wood field
  • 2013-09-06 The Sun over East Newton Elementary
    Frank and Theo went back to East Newton Elementary to let Mrs. Thompson’s 4th graders look at the Sun and let them learn a little more about our Solar system.   • 2013-07-15 Garden Club of Georgia, Wild and Wonderful Summer camp

  • 2013-06-26 $ 27 Fayette County Cub Scouts
    We went to help 185 Fayette County cub scoutsto earn their astronomy belt loops. The glass and mirrors kit showed the scouts what is inside telescopes and what happens to the object your watching when you look through the telescope. they learned about the planets and the solar system, they saw how big red giants will get compared to other stars and they learned how to setup a scope and focus. Outside they were able to look at the sun with a nice sunspot and some small prominences. Here a link to the gallery

    We went to help the SW Atlanta scouts to earn their astronomy belt loops. The glass and mirrors kit showed the scouts what is inside telescopes and what happens to the object your watching when you look through the telescope. They learned about the planets and the solar system, they saw how big red giants will get compared to other stars and they learned how to setup a scope and focus.     We went to help the scouts of Pack 724 earn their astronomy belt loops. The glass and mirrors kit showed the scouts what is inside telescopes and what happens to the object your watching when you look through the telescope. they learned about the planets and the solar system, they saw how big red giants will get compared to other stars and outside they had to setup a scope and focus on the leaves of some trees, because the clouds obstructed the sky.   • 2013-05-28 Astronomy for CE Counselors
    6 counselors attended the session at the Jon Wood Field with Chapter members Frank Garner and Theo Ramakers. We started off with observing the close conjunction of Mercury, Venus and Jupiter together with the Hendersons, followed with explanations and observing of some of the night sky objects one can see at this time of the year.
  • 2013-05-18 The Sun over Rock Eagle
    This was a repeat for Rock Eagle. Frank Garner and Theo Ramakers presented to the visitors of at Rock Eagle in Eatonton. We presented the latest on the Curiosity Rover and discussed how NASA studies the Sun. Because of the cloudy conditions, we were not able to let the visitors observe the sun.
  • 2013-05-18 DeKalb STEM Festival
    Marie and Tim Lott represented the Chapter at the STEM Festival for DeKalb County at Perimeter and Piedmont college in Clarkston. An interested crowd learned about astronomy and because of the cloudy weather, got to see the sun for a total of 7 minutes. Despite this, a very successful event
  • 2013-05-11 JAKES Day at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center

  • 2013-05-09, 13 and 14 The Sun over Trickum Middle School and NASA’s Curiosity Mission
    We went for a three day event to Trickum Middle School for the second year. 720 6th graders attended our presentations about MSL Curiosity, and observed the Sun through white light and H-alpha telescopes. On Monday the 13th, the students were able to see a leaping prominence protrude above the surface of the Sun for 120,000 miles. A great School with students who are very much interested in science.   • 2013-04-30 and 05-01 NASA’s Curiosity and The Sun over McConnell Middle School
    We went for a two day event to McConnell Middle School for the second year. The first day three of the four groups of 40 students not only attended the presentations about NASA’s MSL-Curiosity mission, but also were able to observe the sun through white light and H-alpha solar filters. The remaining 5 groups were not able to see the sun because of cloud coverage, but were very interested in learning everything we presented about Mars and the Sun.   • 2013-04-20 Meteor Madness and Campout at Little Mulberry Park
    A great evening and night under the stars at Little Mulberry Park where participants could see Jupiter, Saturn and some other great nightsky objects.
  • 2013-04-20 Astronomy Day at Fernbank
    We had a great day of clear skies for National Astronomy Day at the Fernbank Science Center where we provided the Solar Scopes! Visitors were able to see the star closest to our planet (a.k.a. the Sun) through a total of 7 white light and hydrogen alpha telescopes. Parents and children alike were amazed at what they were able to see, particularly through the hydrogen alpha telescopes. Here a link to the gallery
  • 2013-04-20 KATES Club at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center
    This was our second year of participation in the Kates Club event at Charlie Elliott. About 100 children and teenagers were bussed from Atlanta to Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center for a day of activities. We did participate with solar observing and other astronomy related activities.   • 2013-04-13 Solar Observing at Anna Ruby Falls, near Helen GA
    Our 4th annual event at scenic Anna Ruby Falls near Helen GA. A great location to let the visitors take a look at the Sun and approx. 400 took the opportunity to see some promenences and filaments, and learned about the relative size of the solar system. Here a link to the gallery
  • 2013-04-10 Astronomy and Space Exploration for Veterans Memorial Middle School
    We were invited to come to Veterans Memorial Middle School in covington where the students learned about the NASA’s MSL mission and how NASA launches and safely lands a mobile laboratory the size of an SUV on Mars. In addition, they learned how to setup scopes and they observed the prominences and filamants on the Sun. Here a link to the gallery
  • 2013-04-09 The Sun over Centerville
    We did participation with an event for the Spring Break Camp of the LEEADS group. A group of 15 students got a chance to learn about meteorites and took a look at the sun.
  • 2013-04-06 The Night Sky over Panola Mountain State Park
    This was our evening program at Panola Mountain Park. Cloudy broken skies made iot hard to see night sky objects, but those who stuck it out with us got to see Jupiter with three of its moons, the Orion Nebual and Saturn as it rose above the tree line.
  • 2013-04-05 2nd annual KITES Festival for Scott Elementary School Atlanta
    Our participation in the 2nd KITES Festival of Scott Elementary School. 7 rotations of students came through and learned about asteroids and meteors and meteorites. Students who really care about science. Cloudy skies did not allow us to setup our solar scopes to view the sun. Here a link to the gallery
  • 2013-03-16 Comet C/2011 L4 over the Dove Fields at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center
    The third scheduled event to see the Comet was at the Dove Fields at Charlie Elliott. A large group of the Atlanta Outdoor Club came to observe the comet, This time it was observed by about 40 through binos and telescopes. Even some of them captured the comet with their cameras.   • 2013-03-15 Astronomy Night at Summerour Middle School
    Several of us went for the fourth time in a row to Summerour Middle School to participate in their Astronomy Night. 80 students and parents took advantage of learning a little more about NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars, and outside they were able to take a closeup view of the planet Jupiter and some interesting craters on the Moon. A view of the Orion Nebula gave them insight how new stars are being born. Click here for a few pictures.
  • 2013-03-09 and 10 Comet C/2011 L4 over Lake Varner
    We scheduled 3 events for the community to see the comet. Two at Lake Varner and one at the Dove Fields at Charlie Elliott. The 9th event happened with clouds in the sky, so we could not observe. On the 10th about 15 individuals scanned the horizon with the naked eye and binos, but we were not able to locate the comet. However, my camera did capture the comet.   • 2013-03-02 Cub Scouts, Den 8 Dunwoody
    We did visit Den 8 of the Dunwoody Cub Scouts to talk about astronomy. Unfortunately the scopes could not be setup because of the bad weather, but they learned about telescopes, asteroids, meteors and meteorites and what is involved in launching a Rover to be send to Mars.Click here for the gallery

    The remaining 4 Classes with 85 6th grade students. Students learned about the Sun and how it affects our life on Earth. The last group was able to observe the sun as the clouds finally gave way to some clear skies

  • 2013-02-07 Sci/Tech Night at Puckett’s Mill, Dacula
    This was our 4th year of participation in Puckett’s Mill’s annual Sci/Tech Night. We were very happy with the attendance of our sessions out of the 600 attendants. 120 Students and parents were very interested in learning the steps involved in bringing a rover of the size of Curiosity from Earth to Mars, and the scientific research the rover will do. Because of the weather, the stargazing was replaced with a session about Comets, in which they were shown what a comet is made up of.Click here for the gallery
  • 2013-01-26 The Sunover Sagamore Hills Elementary
    A large number of students, parents and volunteers of “Hands on Atlanta” attended the lecture with short movies, and also learned about the relative size of the solar system.   • 2013-01-18 Space Camp at Hightower Trail Elementary
    This was our 9th year of participation in Hightower Trail’s Space Camp. The 4th graders at Hightower Trail were able to learn more about the night sky and see Jupiter with four moons, craters on the moon, and the Orion nebula. Inside they learned about the Curiosity rover on Mars and what happens if an astronaut wants to drink a cup of coffee in the International Space StationClick here for the gallery
  • 2013-01-12 The Sun over Oak View elementary
    25 Students from Oakview attended the event with about 10 additional adults . In the classroom they learned about the Sun, how it works and what it does that affects our life on Earth. They also saw what colors the lights in the classroom created, and first hand observed a simulated moon and star using the glass and morrors of our telescope. Outside they learned how tiny we are on earth compared to the sun and the rest of the sola rsystem.   • 2013-01-05 The Sun over Panola Mountain
    We reached out for the second year to Panola Mountain State Park on Hwy 155. Because of broken clouds the visitors had to wait between clouds when the sun would show its face. Half through the event everyone went inside for a presentation on the Sun, the impact the Sun has on our lives on Earth and how we study the Sun.
