Newborn Library Group Event

9 July, 2008 (20:13) | Events | By: tramakers

Thanks to Stephen, Clevis, and Theo. We finished another great event this time at the Newborn Library. We had about 2 dozen children between the ages of 6 and 12 and some parents.

The sky was broken, so between the clouds we were able to show the sun and a few flares. The observers had a choice between real visible colors through Clevis’ refractor and Stephen’s CPC, as well as in H alpha though Stephen’s PST and the mighty Coronado Solarmax.

The children (and the adults as well) did appreciate the views a lot. Following the outside show, it was off to the library to watch a short clip of the Phoenix mission to Mars, and the movie of the Cassini mission to Saturn.

We did get a lot of interesting questions from young and old, and I would not be surprised if some of them will show up at our meeting or at the observing field!

Again, Clevis and StePHen, thanks so much for bringing these kids and adults something they never saw in real time and with their own eyes! Well done!

We have posted some pictures of the event in our gallery. This link will get you to our events folder!!!!

I thank the staff at the Library for their cooperation and for providing the AV equipment. Special thanks to Judy Whitaker for helping us to coordinate this event!

Clear Skies!

All Newborn Library Group Astro Presentation Volunteers

7 July, 2008 (19:37) | Events | By: tramakers

Everything is still on schedule for Wednesday July 9th 2:00pm EDT.

Since Jim is going to be in Gattlinburg this week, I’ll do a part of Jon’s presentation instead, unless Clevis can bring the Cassini movie.

We have been asked to setup the scopes behind Town Hall which is at 4224 Highway 142, Newborn.

The best way to get to Newborn is to take the normal exit 98 of Hwy 20 South to Mansfield. Pass the first Stop sign which is at Hwy 278. The 2nd Stop sign is at Hwy 142. Take a left and go until you cross the rail road tracks. Town Hall is probably less than 1/2 mile further down the road on the right. (It’s a brick building I believe at the corner of N and S Johnson street. It has “Town Hall” above the door)

Judy has confirmed that everything is still on schedule (av projector and screen for movies and presentation after Stephen’s showing the sun.

Will let yo know if anything changes between now and than, and thanks again for your participation.

Clear Skies and thanks for participating

Summer Camp at CE. 2nd Call for telescopes

4 July, 2008 (21:21) | Events | By: tramakers

Just a reminder, CEWC Summer Camp is less than 2 weeks away. This year we have been asked to give classroom presentations, and follow up with observing at the field on two days: Wednesday July 16, and July 23.

Classroom presentation is scheduled in the Visitors Center, from 6:45 until 8:15 pm, then on to the
field for some spectacular views of the heavens from 8:45 until 10:00ish.

Let me know if anyone can assist either in the classroom setting, or with telescopes on the field. Jon will do his powerpoint presentation on the solar system, and we will show the Phoenix movie/presentation shown at the last meeting. Clevis may make his Cassini movie available in case the weather does not cooperate, and we need to spend more time inside.

As the campers won’t be able to stay out too late, the more time we can give them at the eyepiece, the better. The kids were fantastic last year, as I’m sure they’ll be again this year. So drag out those scopes and join the fun.

Stephen Ramsden cannot make it those nights, however Stephen will be joining the groups on both days at 11:30am for a 30 to 45 minute view of the Sun. Thanks so much StePHen!!!

Send me an email if you can particiate at my bellsouth email address or to director @ (at) ceastronomy.org, and if you will be bringing your scope. Let’s show CEWC that we do appreciate it very much that the chapter can use their facilities and the field.

Thanks and Clear Skies,
Theo

Summer Camp at Charlie Elliott – Call for Participation -2 Days

1 July, 2008 (11:59) | Events | By: tramakers

Just a reminder, CEWC Summer Camp is not too far away. This year we have been asked to give classroom presentations, and follow up with observing at the field for two days:  Wednesday July 16, and July 23.

Classroom presentation is scheduled in the Visitors Center, from 6:45 until 8:15 pm, then on to the
field for some spectacular views of the heavens from 8:45 until 10:00ish. Let’s hope the weather is as cooperative as last year, so and we can put on a good show for the youngsters.  Thanks to Stephen we also will be able let the kids take a look at the sun.  See below for details.

Let me know if anyone is interested in assisting either in the classroom setting, or with telescopes on the field. Jon will do his powerpoint presentation on the solar system, and we will show the Phoenix movie/presentation shown at the last meeting. Clevis may make his Cassini movie available in case the weather does not cooperate, and we need to spend more time inside.

Last year, Clevis and Jon teamed up for the presentation inside, and we had several scopes out on the field. As the campers won’t be able to stay out too late, the more time at the eyepiece, the better. The kids were fantastic last year, as I’m sure they’ll be again this year. So drag out those scopes and join the fun.

Because Stephen Ramsden cannot make it those nights, Stephen will be joining the groups on both days at 11:30am for a 30 to 45 minute view of the Sun.  Thanks so much StePHen!!!

Send me an email if you can particiate and if you will be bringing your scope.  Let’s show CEWC that we do appreciate it very much that the chapter can use their facilities and the field.

Thanks and Clear Skies
