Outreach at Hightower Trail Elementary

15 April, 2011 (09:35) | Events, Outreach | By: tramakers

The cloud forecast for tonight is 95% with a chance of thunderstorms, so we are cancelling the observing part of our participation in the Hightower Trail Elementary School’s Space Camp for this year. However Frank and Theo will continue their participation in the rotation events inside the school. We thank Annette and Pierre Michel and Jim Sobelovski for offering their time to come and let the students look through teir telescopes. We hope to see them soon at another event.

Outreach at Social Circle Library

14 April, 2011 (23:59) | Observing, Outreach | By: tramakers

Frank and Theo reached out to their local community at the Social Circle Library. On Saturday morning, April 9th they offered a solar program including solar observing and a presentation about NASA’s Stereo mission. On Thursday evening it was an evening program, and the attendees learned about unusual images. They also learned some more about the planets and their moons in the solar system, the International space Station and the Shuttle. And after the presentation, because it was stil light, they offered the attendees a look at the features of the moon through a telescope. We were happy to reach out to about 20 individuals in our own community, including some very smart young students!! Thanks to all that attended and to Norma Reed for inviting us.

Hightower Trail’s Space Camp. Call for telescopes

11 April, 2011 (09:42) | ALERTS, Outreach | By: tramakers

Hightower Trail Elementary School in Conyers will have their yearly Space Camp on Friday April 15. This has been a great event ever since we first started participating many years ago. So come on out with your scope and let the kids look at the stars and other Wow objects in the sky. The event starts at 6:00 with inside presentations but they will be coming out when it gets dark to look through the scopes and I’ve been told that this might go on until 11:00 P.M since the next day is not a school day.
Address:
2510 Highway 138, NE
Conyers, Georgia 30013
Please let me know if you will be attending, so I can get a list of people coming to join us.
Thanks and Clear Skies,
Theo

Science Night at Puckett’s Mill elementary

30 March, 2011 (19:21) | Outreach | By: tramakers

Last Thursday Annette, Pierre, Frank and Theo went to Puckett’s Mill for their Science Night to show whatever was visible in the nightsky. Unfortunatly the evening ended too early for dark to set in and the cold wind also kept many inside the school. Theo gave three presentations about Mars missions to parents and students as part of the program circulation. Thanks everyone who braved the cold to come out and show the attendees that we are serious about our hobby!

“Astronomy Night” at Summerour Middle School

12 March, 2011 (10:21) | Outreach | By: tramakers

Together with the Atlanta Astronomy Club we finished another event today for about 250 students and parents at Summerour Middle school in Norcross. Inside presentations made them familiar what goes on in NASA’s control room during the landing of a Mars lander and what these missions try to accomplish and how they do it. Outside they all could take a look at a number of celestial bodies such as the moon, saturn, the Orion nebula, open clusters and some prominent (double) stars. Thanks to Mrs. Marjorie Veasey for inviting us to participate again this year, and Annette and Pierre Michel, Frank Garner, Mark Dove, Michael and Theo for participating and making this a great success.

Telescopes needed for Summerour Middle School

6 March, 2011 (23:25) | ALERTS, Outreach | By: tramakers

Telescopes needed for our outreach event at Summerour Middle School for Friday March 11 at 6:30 P.M. – ???
Address: 585 Mitchell Rd, Norcross, GA 30071-4299
We will participate in the classroom presentations and setup scopes at the upper parking deck for students and parents to look at the Universe. As you might remember last year we were only able to let them look at the moon through the clouds. The forcast for this year is much better. So if you have some time to let these kids see what you take for granted, please come out and help us. Everyone will appreciate it.
Thanks and Clear Skies,
Theo

Explore the Sun, Puckett’s Mill, Dacula

24 February, 2011 (19:45) | Outreach, Uncategorized | By: tramakers

We did a combined event for the 4th graders at Puckett’s Mill, and one 2nd grade class, a total of about 250 students, parents and teachers. They got to learn about rhe Sun, NASA’s Stereo mission, and about half of the group was able to look at the Sun with a nice solar flare through our Solar Scope. Unfortunaltely the clouds did not cooperate and blocked the sun for the first 2 hours of the event and after 2:00 P.M. We are looking forward to the Science Night event at Puckett’s Mill in four weeks!! Thanks to Mrs. Mary Tharp for asking us to come!! Click here for some pictures.

Outreach at Summerour Middle School

11 February, 2011 (20:04) | Outreach | By: tramakers

We finished another event today and let about 85 6th grade students at Summerour Middle school in Norcross look at the sun and gave a presentation about the NASA’s Stereo-360 satellites. When we started at 10:00 it was cloudy, but when we came back out half anhour later, the sun was shining!! These students were real sharp and it was a real pleasure being able to work with them in this project. We are looking forward to the Astronomy Night event at Summerour next month!! Thanks to Mrs. Stephany Cooper for asking us to come!! Click here for some pictures.
